PRESS RELEASE IMMEDIATE RELEASE GRUESOME MURDER OF A THREE-YEAR-OLD ELSIES RIVER CHILD SOUTH AFRICA, 15 MAY 2017 Child Welfare South Africa (CWSA) is outraged over the recent murder of a three year old Elsies River child. The body of Courtney Pieters was found in a shallow grave in Epping on 13 May 2017 after days of intense search following the announcement of her disappearance by her family on 04 May, 2017. This heart-breaking incident, unfortunately is the sad state of several children in South Africa. The society cannot continue to watch in silence while the lives of thousands of children are in danger. This should prompt a greater outrage and concern by the society. This situation is worse than living in a war zone. No family should have to worry about the safety of their children. CWSA sends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Courtney Pieters and several other families that have fallen victim to brutality and child violence in the very recent past. Violence of any form should not be tolerated. We call on relevant agencies to investigate the case and ensure justice. As the country approaches the annual commemoration of Child Protection week, CWSA enjoins the society to join hands, and amplify the voices of reason and wisdom, stand in solidarity, and promote the protection of children in our society. We call on all stakeholders to work diligently to prevent further gruesome acts towards children in the country. Outrage is not enough, we need collective action now to end this inhumanity that has become a routine, and to give children in our society the protection they deserve. Join CWSA’s collective actions to protect children against violence and abuse.
